Microsoft SPLA Licenses

Software licensing has become an increasingly complex and costly aspect of a company’s information technology requirements. We overcome these obstacles.  This document outlines a managed licensing solution, which provides painless, flexible and cost effective software licensing and management.

As a Microsoft Certified Hosting Partner, we are entitled to ‘on-rent’ software licenses to customers on a monthly basis.  SPLA licensing has been of significant assistance to customers facing the prospect of Microsoft’s new licensing programs, which in addition to the traditional upfront costs, now requires significant on-going expenditure.

Under this service, a customer chooses to let IS acquire the necessary software licenses through various Service Provider License Agreements (SPLA). IS then becomes the licensee of the software and will ‘on-rent’ it to its customers. The two ways of licensing on this basis are Subscriber Access License (SAL) and CPU Access License (CAL).

SPLA1

SUBSCRIBER ACCESS LICENSE (SAL): Per User Licenses

In the SAL mode, a License is required for each unique individual authorized to use the software in any given month. Benefits of the per subscriber model include:

  • Subscribers can access any number of servers from any number of devices, and
  • Subscribers can "scale out" by deploying as many servers as they need.

SPLA2 CPU ACCESSS LICENSE (CAL):  Per Processor Licenses

When licensing via the CPU licenses, an unlimited number of end users can use the software running on a single CPU for each CPU license acquired. Additional benefits of the per CPU model include:
  • CPU licenses are easier to monitor and count, which lowers the service provider's administrative costs.
  • CPU licenses are economical across a variety of business scenarios where the utilization of the software may vary.
  • CPU licenses replace Internet Connector licenses, eliminating the need to distinguish between Internet, intranet, and extranet users

Benefits of ASP Licenses

Simplified Administration: IS takes a monthly snapshot of the outstanding licenses each month and then makes monthly payments to Microsoft based on those numbers.

Flexible Costs: The solution enables customers to change their rented licenses as the business dictates. This includes changing the number of Licenses purchased as well as the type of License rented (e.g. per processor versus per user). No more Long Term forecasting needed!

Zero Upgrade Costs: The quoted monthly price of each license includes the costs of all upgrades. It provides customers with the right to use the most current (latest release) and all previous versions of the relevant Microsoft products.

No upfront investment: Alternative licensing mechanisms require upfront payment of both licenses and upgrade protection. With ASP Licensing this is unnecessary and mitigates any capital expenditure pain. ·    Manage Cost Centres: We are able to prepare departmental or cost centre licensing schedules and prepare statements. This allows customers to allocate licensing expenditure directly to discrete business units within their organisations.

Flexible Architecture: The Subscriber Access License (SAL) entitles a user to connect to an unlimited number of servers making use of that product without the need for each of those servers to be licensed.
